Impossible Insight

Posted on Fri Apr 26th, 2019 @ 1:38am by Lieutenant Neomi Sabine & Commander Finchley Kerr

Mission: Vivere aut non vivere ...
Location: sickbay
Timeline: two hours after "From the end a beginning"

Neomi had gotten word that Commander Finchley Kerr had miraculously returned from the dead. She had never in her career had a patient die in the line of duty and then come back to life hours later.

Making her way to sickbay to see the commander she was trying to figure out how she would handle the questions she'd be asked or the ones that she herself would be asking.

Entering sickbay she saw a rather striking young man sitting on a bio-bed. She obviously knew that it was the commander. Checking with one of the nurses and getting an update, Neomi walked over to him.

"Hello commander." she said as she approached.

Turning his head at the sound of the voice, Finchley saw an officer walking towards him "Hello Lieutenant, can I help you?" he asked.

"Actually, I was wondering if there was anything I could do for you?" she said as she pulled up a stool and sat down. "Neomi Sabine, Chief Counsellor."

"Please, take a seat won't you Lt Sabine" Finchley said, noting the Counsellor hadn't inquired as to whether he was ready to talk, but instead made a presumption by pulling up the stool and sitting down uninvited.

"I apologize for dropping in unannounced or but I figured after what happened you'd want to talk." Neomi said as she sat down.

"Well, basically I just woke up, oh, twenty minutes ago, to find myself in my quarters having last remembered being on the Borg cube and having tubules thrust into my neck" Finchley answered "You'll forgive me for being somewhat...disorientated Lieutenant" he finished sarcastically.

Neomi could sense some sarcasm in the commander. "I can come back a little later if you'd prefer, give a bit more time to adjust."

" you really think it's going to make any difference when you want to cross examine me on how I came back from the dead Lieutenant?" Finchley asked "do you think it made any difference to Lazarus?"

"Lazarus?" asked Neeomi. She had never heard of the name before.

"One of the religions on Earth is Christianity, and their holy book, the bible, has a character in it called Lazarus" Finchley said "He died and had been put in a cave and the cave entrance had been covered over with a big stone or rock. Four days later, the central holy, religious figure that the bible speaks about, a man called Jesus, goes to the cave and performs a miracle, speaking to God and then having the big stone or rock removed. He then calls on Lazarus to come out of the cave, which he does, and he's alive again" Finchley concluded.

He looked at Neomi and said "It's a very bad comparison I know, but no matter when you speak to me, now or in four days time, I doubt very much how I can tell you 'how' I've come back from being dead."

"Do you think it was a divine intervention that you are alive?" asked the counselor.

"I don't think so" Finchley replied honestly "As I've already said to the Captain, one moment I was on the Borg cube having tubules thrust into my neck, the next thing I know I'm in my quarters. As far as I'm aware, unless my brain is shielding something from me, there was nothing in between."

"I see." said Neomi. "Has Doctor MacKenzie been able to explain anything?"

"I've not heard anything from the doctor" Finchley replied "I believe she was asked by the Captain to look into my situation and see if she can work it out, but I've no idea if she has" he finished.

Neomi realized it was getting a bit late and she still had more patients to see. "I have a patient session in a couple minutes. I'll keep my calendar open and available for you if you wish to talk some more."

"Short and to the point" Finchley replied "I'd suggest you talk to Doctor MacKenzie for any answers as to the how and why of this situation, it's not something I believe I can answer, well, not at the moment at least. Thank you for stopping by Lieutenant."

Naomi got up and nodded. Walking to the door of sickbay she looked back for a brief moment before leaving. She had a lot of work to do.
