Gathering some Intel before a meeting

Posted on Sun Sep 9th, 2018 @ 11:02pm by Captain Evelynn Haught & Commander Finchley Kerr

Mission: Vivere aut non vivere ...
Location: Chief Intelligence Officers office
Timeline: Current.

Captain Evelynn Haught was curious as to how the rest of the investigation in the logs that she gave Commander Kerr to finish up was going. Deciding that it would be better for her to go to the Commader's office rather than him come to her ready room was because the Commander's office was on her way to her quarters.

Entering the turbolift Evelynn gave the computer her destination. "Intelligence Office."

In his office, Kevin re-checked for the fourth time that the information he had was something to take to the CO. As he was about to rise from his seat, satisfied in himself that the information was indeed correct and that he should hasten to meet the Captain, he was surprised when the chime on his door sounded.

"Come in..." he said.

The doors to the Intelligence office parted to reveal Captain Evelynn Haught. "Good evening Commander. I was heading off duty and wanted to see how things were coming along with the logs?" asked the captain as she entered the small but luxurious office.

Kevin hurried out from behind his desk, and offered the CO his seat as he replied "We managed to get a bit of a breakthrough with piecing together most of one of the Security logs Sir, well, actually, it was my Assistant Chief, Lt Karadis, who managed to get the information, let me play it for you."

"EM frequency degradation leads to the Dead...don't know exactly what..Indications are we inve...Captain uncertain but in origin."

Looking at the Captain, Finchley said "It could be our worst fears are realized Sir."

Evelynn sat back in the chair. "I was afraid of that. Its been over a decade since Starfleet has had any direct contact with the Borg. But the question is, what could they be doing in the Dead Zone? I mean it's pretty much a barren area and nothing really of interest."

"It's barren as far as we're aware Sir" Finchley said "but, hypothecising for a second, if it is the Borg we're up against here, what if they have some kind of cloaking technology now that we don't know anything about? Perhaps the USS Clip stumbled upon this by accident, but weren' able to react in time. There is one thing that's bothering me Sir. Given what I've read about the Borg and how they operate, they go in and unless the species they're up against surrender straight away, they literally destroy their ships, facilities or planets, assimilate the species and their technology if it will enhance their own, then leave. We have no evidence that the USS Clip was under heavy attack and as far as I can read from reports, the ship itself, apart from the computer and the ships logs, is more or less intact apart from not having any crew. I have a bad feeling about this Captain, what if the Clip is being used as a decoy to lure more ships here?" he finished.

"If that is the case then we have a big problem on our hands. What else do you have to show me?" asked Evelynn.

"The USS Clip itself is intact, no major damage" Finchley said "now, if we are dealing with the Borg, doesn't that strike you as odd?" he asked rhetorically. Carrying on he added "The reports that we've had of past Borg attacks show that they would go for the primary systems, and do as much damage as they could, that way when the drones go in, it's easy pickings for them. The Clip as I've just said shows no sign of major damage, which means that either they surprised some how and tricked into lowering their shields, or, they invited whoever it was who attacked them to come and do so. I'm guessing it's not the second option Sir, so it must be the first. We 'could' be dealing with an entirely new version of tactically astute Borg, Borg that don't just bludgeon their prey and assimilate them, but instead, who deceive them before assimilating them" he finished.

"Let me see if I'm understanding everything here so far. We are dealing with the Borg but not the Borg that we know and have encountered in the past. The USS Clip has no discernable damage and its crew is missing. So where does that bring us. Are we the next to fall into this so called trap?" said Evelynn

"As far as we can discern Sir, yes, that's our best guess, but if we're cautious, we don't have to fall into the Borg trap, instead, we could spring it instead and try to gather as much information on their new strategy as we can so we can send the information back to fleet HQ" Finchley answered.

"Lets just hope that the opportunity presents itself when the time comes." said Evelynn.

"Indeed Sir, that's all I have at the moment, I'll keep working on the logs though in case anything else comes up" Finchley finished.

"Keep me informed Commander." said Evelynn as she got up and left the Intelligence Office.
